Marc Ambinder comments on the John McCain’s report pop taste in EW and also Obama taste in EW:
In reading his post, which focuses on the young and hip, au courrant choices of McCain and the age old classic taste of Obama, I wondered if what we were seeing was each campaign spinning taste in public to attract the demographics they don’t do so well with: McCain with kids and Obama with geezers.
But in reading the sources, I see something different.
McCain’s first choice for music mentions are Roy Orbison and Linda Ronstadt — both known for country and rock hits, which the his base probably loves. Second choice, for McCain, is Usher:
So he spent presumably decades liking singers who sing rock and country, but didn’t like Usher until his SNL appearance — a few weeks ago.
Obama’s articulated tastes, on the other hand — and his awareness of trends — is a bit broader. His old sitcom watching comes from what was on when he was a kid. He still thinks they’re the best. Meanwhile, with two young girls, he knows what they watch.
McCain seems more like he’s pandering or using the questions as a platform for his agenda — such as saying he likes Indianna Jones because the old guy wins. Obama just seems to be answering the questions without as much artifice. Your mileage may vary.
