Tony, I have a Nexus One (love it!) and I’m now using the HTC Desire’s Sense UI in a alpha build (love it too!).

So I’d have to disagree with you — you’ll probably wait a shorter time and still have the Sense UI by getting a Nexus One. I’m hoping for people on other carriers who opt for the HTC Desire (Bravo) that they get updates almost as fast as the Nexus One folks, because it’s almost the same phone.

But I bet Nexus One users will still get the Sense UI faster than the Sense UI phones get the stock Android OS updates.

Comments

The Google Phone store went up moments after they mentioned it in their presentation.

And it’s coming to T-mobile right away and Verizon in the Spring!

Give Yourself Permission

Comments

This weekend I had a farewell dinner with a friend of mine. He’s moving back to New Jersey, he says, for six months. He says he’s coming back to Los Angeles. He moved out here to be an actor. He also loves singing and dancing. Over the four years I’ve known him, he’s always been convinced he could really act, really sing, and really dance. The greatness is within himself. He’s sure of it.

I’ve listened to him before.

We all have greatness inside us.

For some reason – maybe because he’s leaving for six months, which could mean forever – the scene went a little differently this time.

INT. HOLLYWOOD BAR -- NIGHT

GIB and ACTOR FRIEND sit at the bar again. Two empty wine glasses and two beer bottles in front of them and two dirty plates with napkins folded on top.

ACTOR FRIEND

I just need someone to give me a chance.

GIB

How many times have you auditioned for a play? Just shown up with your headshots and gone in and auditioned?

ACTOR FRIEND

Uhhh... Four? I think four times.

GIB

And you’ve been here for how many years?

ACTOR FRIEND

Four years.

GIB

You don’t need someone to give you a chance.  You need to give yourself permission.

It’s 2010.

How can you give yourself permission this year? Without a need for cash or more time than you have right now.

The NY Times Is Wrong About Publishers, Hard Covers, and Kindles

Comments

Other writers have critiqued the Kindle and eBooks without using them, but the New York Times (really, Nick Bilton) now makes a mistake in the other direction:

Kindles Are Great for Beach Reading

BONS MOTS: The View and obnoxious shrieking voices

Comments

Futurama Into the Wild Green Yonder - FryFuturama’s recent movie release, Into the Wild Green Yonder with a theme sung by none other than Seth MacFarlane (TV’s highest paid writer-producer), has many great one liners.

My current favorite as I watch features Fry, suddenly telepathic, asking the bum in the street about his telepathy:

What’s with the obnoxious, shrieking voices? Are my fillings picking up The View?

BONS MOTS: Obama’s Guide to Becoming Famous

Comments

I really enjoyed this line from President Obama:Diplomat

“The easiest way to get 15 minutes of fame,” Mr. Obama said, “is to be rude to someone.”

Of course, I have to read it two ways: he didn’t become famous by being rude.  But on the other hand, this week his fame took a weird turn for calling Kanye West a jackass when he thought he was off the record.

Why did YouTube Censor the Android-powered Archos touch tablet?

Comments

That’s the question I asked myself while reading Seth H. Weintraub’s provocative review of the new touch tablet that he asserts out-shines the iPhone and the Zune in several key ways.

Schoolfilm

The answer surprised me and gave me a bit of nostalgia for my trips to the Los Angeles piece of Americana, the Silent Movie Theatre on Fairfax.

BONS MOTS: men and women seeking love for the night

Comments

day 49/366 [seek and hide]

While investigating the Hotel Café, a venue where the wonderful Broadway star and film actor James Snyder will perform his original songs tonight (9/16/09) in Hollywood, I ran across these bons mots in a Yelp review by Lynette:

Thus far one of my favorite places to listen to live music, drink, and have an easy night without having crawling creatures (meaning men and women seeking love for the night).

I like how inclusive her definition of crawling creatures is.

So where I’m going is apparently a venue with live music at night, that, surprise! Actually has a crowd that focuses on the live music rather than hooking up.

Or is her Yelp review a sneaky form of counter-programming to improve her odds? Time will tell!

How to respond when people ask you to read their script

BONS MOTS: Writers are readers.

Comments

Ran across this article because of a post on Tech Crunch about business plans being like screenplays:Youth & Age

It rarely takes more than a page to recognize that you’re in the presence of someone who can write, but it only takes a sentence to know you’re dealing with someone who can’t.

(By the way, here’s a simple way to find out if you’re a writer. If you disagree with that statement, you’re not a writer. Because, you see, writers are also readers.)

Josh Olson

Of course, as much as I agree about being able to spot a writer right away, I disagree with his attitude and a lot of his other points.
