BONS MOTS: Camera geeks and their perverted hobby
A photographer friend of mine referred me to Ken Rockwell’s excellent site, where I found this great quotation:
Many people who read my site buy and own too many cameras. They enjoy dissecting photos for engineering details (as I often do on this site) more than they enjoy making photos. They’re often the same guys who buy too many other toys. Those are the people who keep insisting you buy a more expensive camera, since it justifies their perverted hobby. It doesn’t make any better photos.
by Ken Rockwell
A lot of what Rockwell writes about is the importance of technique over technology — something I agree with (to a degree). Technology should make your artistry easier, but technique is really what makes your artistry seem effortless when you’re really rockin’.

Mormons and Mordor

While looking for a photo for another post, I raw across this amazing photo.
Something about it screamed out at me — Mormons are in Mordor!
I don’t know, it’s probably some part of my unconscious that’s not very sweet or pleasant or kind or forgiving latching onto internal strife and encapsulating it as some archetypal stuff.
On the other hand, it just might be fucking funny.

Update: For some reason, this post is getting a lot of attention many months after posting it.
This seems suitable to me, because there’s a lot of Mormons in the news over repealing Proposition 8.
Turns out that the Mormons funded Proposition 8’s passing with greater numbers than was previously reported admitted by them.
So if the tabernacle looks like Mordor, who’s Sauron in this comparison? Hmmm…. Any ideas? Add your comments below.
Mrs. Ellen Degeneres
People magazine has promised a full panoply of photographs from the wedding of Ellen Degeneres & Portia Di Rossi.
Having known Portia personally, I can only wish them the best.
As a fan of marriage equality, I can only hope the beautiful photos of their nuptials will help the nation and the world relax a little.
Here’s the cover of People’s forthcoming issue. Another pic from People’s online preview after the jump.

I’m trying out the new web browser, Flock and seeing how easy it is to create a post from browsing my Flickr account.
Fairly easy so far!
