Remember how a little while back the blogosphere was abuzz about FaceBook’s efforts with Beacon?

A group of irked Facebook members filed a class-action lawsuit against Facebook Tuesday that said the company’s controversial Beacon advertising program violates several laws, including the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA), the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), and the Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA).

I was updating my Amazon Wishlist for a secret Santa exchange, and I noticed that there was a new column for whether an item in the wish list had been purchased.  Everything was marked Hidden.  I clicked on the Hidden and the options above appeared.

How thoughtful! Amazon does right in so many ways.  And the ways it does wrong I haven’t been noticing, if there are any.

How about the stiff bill Detroit Mayor Kilpatrick just received for his text messages?

Mr. Kilpatrick’s troubles began in January when the Detroit Free Press published text messages between the mayor and his former chief of staff, Christine Beatty, that appeared to contradict their sworn testimony in a whistleblower trial last year that they didn’t have an affair.

Kilpatrick must pay a million dollars — and also lose his pension.

The 38-year-old, two-term mayor agreed to spend 120 days in jail, to pay the city $1 million in restitution, and to give up his pension benefits.

I cannot help but recall Bill Clinton. He, too, lied under oath. But he never admitted it. The judge charged Clinton$90,000 for his lies — which somehow looks like a great discount, even with inflation.

On the one hand, Kilpatrick’s case was more direct — he was being sued because of his professional misconduct in relation to the affair he lied to the court about.  Clinton, on the other hand, lied to the court about his relationship with Monica Lewinsky in the Paula Jones case to cover up Clinton’s pattern of womanizing in the workplace.

Kilpatrick also has to do jail time.  Things to consider when booty call texting — nothing’s private forever!
